Jahaad Ubrich, age 26, of Schenectady, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Schenectady County Court on Friday, Jan. 26.

It followed his jury conviction for assault and related charges stemming from the July 2022 attack.

According to prosecutors, Ubrich coaxed a homeless person to knock on the door of his former girlfriend and the mother of two of his children early on July 17, 2022.

When the woman opened the door, Ubrich forced his way into the apartment and began repeatedly punching her in the face.

Throughout the nearly 10-minute assault, the victim held the couple’s 4-month-old son in her arms in an effort to protect him.

Ubrich finally relented when Schenectady Police officers showed up, fleeing out a back door. When officers confronted him, he took off running but was eventually arrested in a nearby backyard.

The victim was hospitalized with multiple injuries, including a fractured nose and lacerations to her head and arm.

In September 2023, following a week-long trial, a Schenectady County jury found Ubrich guilty of two counts of burglary, as well as assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was acquitted of criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, and obstructing governmental administration.

“The victim in this case endured abuse during the entirety of their relationship,” said Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney.

“We thank her for steadfastly working with us to expose the defendant’s conduct, earning him a prison sentence which will appropriately reflect the abuse he inflicted upon her as well as the criminal history he has already accumulated at a fairly young age.”

Ubrich’s sentence will run consecutively to an unrelated sentence he is already serving for weapons possession.

Visiting County Court Judge Tatiana Coffinger also issued a 32-year order of protection for the victim and her son.

During Friday’s sentencing hearing, Coffinger referred to body camera footage of the incident as “chilling” and compelling.”
